How it works

What we take

Tailoring from the Italian, French and English houses, in wearable condition. Jackets, suits, overcoats, dinner clothes, trousers, and the shirts, knitwear and shoes that go with them. Sizes 44 to 60 IT. The list of houses on The Map is the list we know well enough to write about, which is the test: if we cannot tell a buyer what your garment is, we will not sell it for you.

The price floor is around €150 a piece at sale. Below that the work of cataloguing costs more than the commission earns, and you are better served by a marketplace.

We refuse active moth, persistent odour, a collapsed chest or failed canvas, and anything altered so far past its reserve that it cannot be brought back. A shined seat, a shortened sleeve or a small rewoven repair is not a refusal. It is a disclosure, and disclosed faults sell.

The terms

You keep a share of the sale price that rises with the price. There is no listing fee, no photography fee and no charge for a piece that does not sell.

Sale price of the piece You keep We keep Example
Up to €500 60% 40% A Canali sport coat sells at €380, you receive €228.
€500 to €1,500 70% 30% A Brioni suit sells at €950, you receive €665.
Over €1,500 80% 20% A Cesare Attolini overcoat sells at €2,200, you receive €1,760.

Tiers apply per piece, on the price the buyer pays before shipping. For a wardrobe of ten pieces or more the whole lot is priced at the 70 per cent tier as a floor, whatever the individual prices. For comparison, Vestiaire Collective's general seller pays 17 per cent plus 3 per cent payment costs and photographs the piece himself; a Paris dépôt-vente commonly keeps 40 to 50 per cent.

  • Pricing. We propose a price with the reasoning, against what the same house and model has sold for. You agree it before anything goes live. Nothing is discounted without your word.
  • Term. Ninety days on the site. If a piece has not sold by then, we either revise the price together or we send it back at our cost.
  • Payment. Bank transfer within 14 days of the buyer's return window closing, with a statement showing the sale price and the split.
  • Insurance. Your garments are insured from the moment they leave your hands, in transit and while they are with us.
  • The record. Every consigned piece is photographed and written up to the same standard as our own, and you receive the photographs and measurements whether or not it sells.
  • Buying outright. For some pieces we would rather buy than consign. If so we will say so and make an offer, and you choose.
The process
  1. 1
Write to us. Use the form below. Two photographs per piece are enough to start: the label and the whole garment on a hanger. Say where you are and roughly how many pieces.
  2. 2
We reply within two working days with what we can take, a first idea of price for each piece, and how we would like to receive it.
  3. 3
The pieces reach us. By prepaid insured label, on a collection day in your city, or, for a wardrobe, we come to you.
  4. 4
Catalogued and live within ten days of arrival. You see the listing before it goes up, and you see every sale the day it happens.
Where we collect

We are in Strasbourg, on the Rhine, which puts most of the wardrobes we want within four hours' drive. How a piece reaches us depends on how many there are.

A wardrobe: ten pieces or more

We come to you, by appointment, anywhere in the circle below. We look at everything in your hands, take what we can sell, tell you plainly what we cannot and why, and leave you a signed inventory. Nothing is packed until we have agreed the list.

A few pieces

Either a prepaid, insured shipping label from anywhere in Europe, or one of the collection days we hold each month in Paris, Zurich, Geneva and Frankfurt, where we meet for twenty minutes with the pieces and a coffee.

France

Paris · Strasbourg · Colmar · Mulhouse · Nancy · Metz · Reims · Dijon · Besançon · Lyon on request

Switzerland

Basel · Zurich · Geneva · Lausanne · Bern · Lucerne

Germany

Frankfurt · Stuttgart · Munich · Karlsruhe · Freiburg · Heidelberg · Mannheim · Baden-Baden · Cologne and Düsseldorf on request

Elsewhere

Luxembourg · Brussels on request · Everywhere else in Europe by prepaid, insured label

Collection days are announced to the register a fortnight ahead. We accept consignment from anywhere in Europe, and further afield on request: if your city is not on the list, your pieces travel by prepaid, insured label, and if you have a wardrobe, write anyway and name the city. From outside Europe, write before you send anything, so the customs paperwork is agreed in advance.

Questions we get asked
Do you sell on Vinted, Vestiaire or eBay as well?
Some pieces also appear on Vinted, at the same price, because some buyers only look there. The listing there is written to the same standard and points back here. The split to you is the same wherever it sells.
What if I disagree with your grade?
The scale is public and the faults are photographed, so we argue from the pictures, not from adjectives. If a photograph shows we were wrong, the grade changes.
Can I have a piece back before the ninety days?
Yes, at any time, at your shipping cost if it has been listed, at ours if it has not. If a buyer has already paid, the sale stands.
Will my name appear anywhere?
No. Listings say what the garment is, never who owned it, unless you want the provenance stated and it helps the piece.
Do you take women's tailoring, or bags and watches?
No. Men's tailoring and what is worn with it, from the houses we know. Anything else we will decline quickly rather than badly.

The record

Every consigned piece gets the treatment our own pieces get: measured flat at six points and more, graded on the published six-tier scale, faults named and photographed, the house written up, ten studio photographs. Then it sits next to Brioni, Kiton and Attolini, in front of the people who came here for that.
