The House

Canali

Triuggio, 1934. Canvassed, and consistent.

Canali is the least romantic house in this archive and, for a buyer who cannot try a garment on, possibly the most useful. Founded by two brothers at Triuggio in 1934, still owned by the family, still making everything in seven plants in Italy with about 1,500 people, roughly 1,100 of them Italian.

The thing it does that nobody else quite does is industrialise without giving anything up. It installed the first automatic electronic cutting system in Italy in 1974 and put the savings into keeping the canvas: the ready-to-wear is canvassed rather than fused across the range, made domestically, at roughly 250,000 garments a year. Most houses that reached that volume fused the fronts or moved the work abroad.

What to look for is the sub-label, which is a block and a segment rather than a quality ladder. Kei, created in 2007, is the soft unlined jacket — minimal or no padding, slimmer, Neapolitan in influence. It is a different brief, not a downgrade. Exclusive is the top cloth tier, Super 150s to 200s. Black Edition dates from 2019 or 2020.

How it wears now: Exclusive's high Super numbers look superb and abrade fast — occasion cloth rather than commuting cloth. The real argument for buying Canali blind is consistency. A quarter of a million garments a year from seven owned plants means sizing and construction are unusually predictable across years.

Reading it in the hand

What gets looked at before a piece is catalogued, and what you can check yourself. Nothing here depends on the label.

  • Made in Italy in owned plants, with no offshore tier. Non-Italian origin on Canali tailoring is suspect.
  • Canvassed rather than fused across the tailoring range — chest and lapel float independently under a pinch.
  • Sub-labels are segments and blocks, not a blind ladder. Kei is the unlined, unstructured soft jacket from 2007; Exclusive is the top cloth tier; Black Edition dates from 2019–20; 1934 is an upper tailoring line.
  • "Su Misura" means ordered rather than stocked, so unusual combinations of cloth, lining, lapel and vent are consistent with made-to-measure rather than with a fake.
  • Unusually consistent, symmetrical cutting and pattern-matching compared with hand-cut makers — a consequence of machine cutting — combined with hand-finished sleeve setting.
